Define what a slot represents
A slot may require a practitioner, room, or piece of equipment. Record the duration, time zone, and relevant availability rules. A booking should reserve all required resources atomically. Decide whether buffers are needed between appointments and whether overlapping services are permitted, rather than assuming every calendar block represents one interchangeable resource.
Avoid double booking
Two users can select the same slot before either confirms. Validate availability on the server at confirmation time and return a helpful alternative if it has changed. Treat repeated requests as the same booking when appropriate. Do not rely on a disabled browser button as the only concurrency control.
Separate arrival from treatment
Scheduled time, check-in, service start, and completion are different events. Keep delays visible without displaying sensitive patient details to the whole waiting area. Define who can reorder a queue and record the reason. Clinical prioritization must remain under the organization’s qualified decision makers, not an arbitrary generic scheduling rule.
Plan cancellations and rescheduling
Preserve the previous appointment and notify only through approved channels. Check consent and contact preferences before sending reminders. Test daylight-saving changes, missed appointments, and a provider becoming unavailable. A public demo should use fictional appointments and make clear that no real booking or patient communication is taking place.
A planning guide. The right implementation depends on your system and requirements.
